It's surprising the number of websites and businesses that are still not taking mobile seriously. Time, we thought, for a reminder to take a look at what is happening in the world.
Let's look at some statistics:
- Mobile broadband growth worldwide 2012 - 40%
- Mobile page views - 2011: 5.8% - 2012: 10.1%
- Anticipated sales of tablets in 2013 - 172.4 million, up
- Websites must be mobile friendly to conform to the new FTC advertising guidelines
- Developing countries are focusing on wireless , for example, Kenya where 99.9% of connections are mobile
- Percentage of e-commerce first views, growth rate 80%.
This number of statistics is enough, because, frankly, if you are not persuaded by these then you aren't going to be persuaded by anything. If you still need to be persuaded, jump out to mobithinking for the latest information.
Any business that is not going mobile is going backwards and refusing to see the present.
Our advice to anyone is to take a look at all your online content and ready-to air-material. Can it be read and understood easily on mobile devices? Can your manuals easily be downloaded and viewed on a mobile device?
The reality check is that the smart phone is becoming the main communication device and that the iPad and their equivalents are the new laptops - take anywhere, read anywhere. The coming generation of users are not going to be tied to their desks or to make allowances for poor display. They will expect to buy, to read, and to receive their news and content on smart devices.
The important message is, if you want to retain your business, then it's time to get up and make those changes!
